Greg Dixon, candidate for Judge in District 21, had just been attacked late in the campaign. Dixon needed to respond quickly and creatively in this non-partisan election. Since Election Day was just days away, the only way to respond effectively was to use an automated phone call.
On Oct. 30th, in front of 85,000 fans, the ’85 OU Sooner Football Team celebrated the 25 year anniversary of their National Championship. A player on that team, Greg Dixon was on the field that day with Coach Lucious Selmon. Coach Selmon agreed to help Greg out. In response to a nasty personal attack, Coach Selmon delivered a message to voters about Dixon not only being a champion on the field, but a leader and champion off the field.
The Univ. of Oklahoma is in District 21, and bringing attention to Dixon’s leadership on and off the field right in the middle of football season really helped him connect with the voters. The call could not have been more perfectly timed, and as a result Dixon went on to win with 54%.
On February 4, 2011 Front Porch Strategies won a Reed Award for this timely and effective automated call titled “Sooner Magic.”
